Throughout 2017 Queanbeyan Landcare Inc. members have undertaken
Queanbeyan Railway Station clean-up - Always ably led by Tom Baker, QLc continues to maintain the surrounds of the historic Queanbeyan Railway Station on the first Saturday morning of each month.
Fernleigh Park Group – Jerrabomberra Creek Stepping Stones for Birds at Fernleigh Park Grant Project – Bruce Davies, Peter Woodbury reported that the group has undertaken a number of Saturday morning sessions to maintain by weeding, mulching, staking etc the more than 1100 native plants within the 5 fenced bird connectivity enclosures.
Environment Fair Sat October 17th - Tom Baker, Dave Dempster, Katrina Willis, Bill Willis reported that the QCC River Festival/ Environment Fair was an enjoyable event, that was important in building positive relations between QLc and the Queanbeyan District community.
The Poplars (Kinlyside St) – QLc members regularly spend time and effort removing weeds such as Serrated Tussock from rare and engendered colonies of Button Wrinkle-wort. We are indebted to FOG for their support at the The Poplars (Kinlyside St)
MSG Stringybark/Environa Project - the Advisory Group QLc Members of the Advisory Group - Tom Baker, Peter Woodbury, Carolyn Larcombe and Bill Willis reported that QLc is working with QCC to ready the 120 hectare offset site for ripping and planting on the 1st May 2016. QCC had the site ripped ready for planting in May 2016. Photo-points for monitor plantings have been staked and GPS waypoints taken. Native plants recommended by QLc have been ordered by QCC. It is proposed to invite the ADFA cadets and the CIT Horticulture Students to assist with the plantings on 1st May 2016. Stock (goats and sheep) will be removed. Any required fencing is now underway.
Environa – Pott’s Creek /Jasper’s Gorge Project MCG and QLc is working with David Larcombe, the landholder, on fencing this site. Fencing is completed (Kristie Dawes (MCG)). Bill Wills took GPS waypoints for GIS. Lynton Bond and Kristie Dawes of MCG, determined the project boundaries. and the area 17.1hectare site is consistent with the grant. Tom Baker found Aprasia parapulchella on the site.
Queanbeyan Bi-centennial Park Group -The Coordinator, Helen Hadobas reported. Along with Bill W (QLc) a meeting with QCC (Tim Geyer (manager), Justin Robinson (mowing) and Libby Duncan (weeds) was held and QCC mowing policy was analysed and changes to the QCC policy and practice negotiated. Bill Willis (QLc) and Helen Hadobas (Queanbeyan Bi-centennial Park Group) gave written responses to the QCC Bicentennial Park Concept Plan report. Both were critical of QCC’s failure to acknowledge and respect the work of UC Landscape Architecture students at this site. Considerable time and effort was spent by group members removing woody weeds and removing target weeds such as St John’s wort and African Love Grass by hands and by spraying.
Queanbeyan Landcare Mount Jerrabomberra Group - Roger Clement organised and reported that Daryl Crapp and Alison Roach led a floral walk on Mnt Jerrabomberra on the 24th October, 2015. 13 happy people had an enjoyable and instructive walk.
Open Gardens – Tom Baker had his garden open on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22rd November at Irene St, Queanbeyan. Lyn and Pete Woodbury Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th had their at Googong. Native Plants propagated by QLc members were on sale over the two days.
Candlebark Park-let - Helen McIntyre lead and commenced the park-let’s native planting and mulching of the park’s access path. This project should be completed by the end of winter 2016 and needs greater QLc member support.
